20% into Immortal Rules:
Supposedly a worthy successor to the Hunger Games. Let’s have a look see :)

A dystopian novel about vampires!

My thoughts after finishing the book:

actual rating: 4.5

Julie Kagawa is a master magician in word building. She has the ability to make it seem like a movie is being played out in front of me instead of me just reading words in a book. I actually had nightmares while reading the story. I have seen all kinds of vampire movies and read all kinds of vampire books from Anne Rice to the sparkly vampire— but only Julie Kagawa gave me nightmares :D. The book felt like a mash between Resident Evil and Blade— really spooky stuff.
Overall, this was one enjoyable read. Although some parts felt rushed and I wished some points were explored deeper. The love angle, for instance, felt rushed. I couldn’t see how Zeke was enamored with Allison. Even the physical attraction part wasn’t highlighted (if this is the case) (how do you fall in love at first sight with a person full of grime ;D) (although there was this cutesy scene after Allison had the chance to somehow clean up). I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be remedied in the sequel.

The cliffhanger ending— don’t get me started with the cliffhanger ending. I absolutely loathe evil cliffhangers!! :D. How am I supposed to function normally after that ending? ;P
Sometimes I wish that I start reading series that have been completed, that way I don’t suffer the long wait.

—The sequel can’t be released soon enough :D. I absolutely need book 2 NOW.

An emotionally charged read!!
I loved how Veronica Roth has fashioned an alternate world with flawed characters. The flaws allowed me to become emotionally invested in the story. Take the case of Tris and Four’s relationship— people do not always see eye to eye no matter how deeply they feel for each other. Tris and Four both fought for their own convictions and it added to the depth of their relationship.
Roth has managed to inject a philosophical edge to the Divergent universe. What does it really mean to be human? What makes our actions moral and immoral. Is an act deemed moral.just because it is aligned with our ideologies? What makes one faction better than the other? Unwittingly, Roth has managed to have her readers undergo an existential journey.
If you love dystopian literature, you will definitely enjoy the Divergent series! Insurgent (book 2) does not disappoint - just the right mix of romance, action and a suckerpunch ending you wouldn’t see coming.
Book 3 will be one of my most anticipated reads.

Actual rating: 3.5

One must have a willing suspension of disbelief as well as patience for slow starting stories when reading this book. The author tends to become too wordy at times ; but if you held on you would find the middle to the end of the book was worth the read. That being said, I actually enjoyed reading it.

This was being touted as a YA version of the Da Vinci Code and rightfully so. I would have given this a higher rating had I not read the Da Vinci Code. It seems that all the elements : conspiracy theory, secret societies, religious fanatics and the occasional crazed monk in Da Vinci Code were also in BoBS. Hence, I kind of expected how the end unfolded.

(more to follow just my initial thoughts after reading the book)

(pseudo) Shadowhunter Codex

Great news for Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices readers! Cassie Clare will be releasing the much anticipated Shadowhunter Codex by November 2013. ( that is if the Mayans are proven false in their end of the world predictions)

To while away the time until I get my hands on the tome, I am going to list all the definitions as well as important facts about our beloved Shadowhunters in my blog.

IDRIS -Shadowhunter home country. Protected by wardings (spells). For mundie purposes, it is located between France and Germany.

PARABATAI - a pair of warriors who fight together. Closer than brothers.

IRATZE - a healing rune. *finishing a rune with a stele activates it.

JACE WAYLAND - hates bergamot, cucumber and earl grey.

IFRIT- warlocks with no magic. Half demons who cannot cast spells .

Shadowhunters are allowed to kill rogue vampires who drink human blood from living people.

Motto of the Circle - In Hoc Signo Vinces translated : by this sign we will conquer.
